Aloha,
Hula is more than
dancing. It is a way of life.
Core to our values is hō’ihi
(respect),
lōkahi
(harmony), and mālama (care).
We believe that our 'ohana
(family)
becomes stronger when we live in a manner
that our ancestors have passed down.
Our
values
Hō'ihi me kealoha
pumehana no ka hula
(to behave
respectfully, "to spread my love for the
Hula")
-
Hō’ihi...
Treat with respect
- Utmost
respect must always be afforded to
the Kumu Hula, leaders in the Halau
and the Kupuna. By doing so, the
individual wins both pride and
admiration from others as well as
her/himself.
- Lōkahi...Harmony
- To achieve a
comfortable balance between all
members of the Halau, one must
strive to foster only good feelings.
To work together as a “we” and not
to act as an “I”, shows great
lokahi.
- Mālama...
To care for
- We must care
for one another and all things.
Common sense dictates that if you
are able to treat others with good
manners, they will return the favor.
(If they don'
then be content with knowing that
YOU have more pride for yourself as
well as for others.)
- Kōkua...
To help
- Support -
whether you have invested a
tremendous amount of time, energy
and/or financial assistance, or
through small favors, the halau
needs to know it is being supported
wholeheartedly.
- 'Onipa'a...
Firmness
- To have
discipline, one is a well-organized
individual who serves to establish
an image of responsibility and
trustworthiness.
- Ho'oponopono...
To discuss family
issues & forgiveness
- Remember
compassion, mistakes are only human;
we all make them. It is a special
person who is able to look beyond
human frailties and see the true
source of human existence, which
lies within the heart. Love for
those who are less fortunate is a
divine quality.
- Na'auao...
Wisdom
-
Determination and perseverance is
part of wisdom, through trial and
error, one learns that steadfast
persistence will eventually lead to
success. Humility is also part of
wisdom; in our lives, we should all
aspire to be the best we can yet
when success comes, we need to
embrace a humbing feeling. To live
just to boast of one's achievement
is destructive to one's self as well
as to those who are around us.
- Kuleana...
Responsibility
- To learn
Ho'ihi is to have patience; a virtue
for which time rewards. Goals can
only be attained when a person is
willing to sacrifice the time and
energy with responsibility.
- Pule & Aloha...
Prayer and love
- With
prayers and love, our halau will be
the home of Ho'ihi our 'Ohana
deserves
